Audacity

Overview

A fast multi-track audio editor and recorder for Linux, BSD, Mac OS, and Windows. Supports WAV, AIFF, Ogg, and MP3 formats. Features include envelope editing, mixing, built-in effects and plug-ins, all with unlimited undo.

The latest release of Audacity is 1.3.4 (beta). Because it is a work in progress and does not yet come with complete documentation or translations into foreign languages, it is recommended for more advanced users. See New Features in 1.3 for more information about the 1.3.x beta series.

For all users, Audacity 1.2.6 is a stable release, complete and fully documented. You can have both Audacity 1.2.6 and 1.3.3 installed simultaneously.

Features

This is a list of features in Audacity, the free audio editor. For more information on how to use these features, go to the help pages.

Recording

Audacity can record live audio through a microphone or mixer, or digitize recordings from cassette tapes, vinyl records, or minidiscs. With some sound cards, it can also capture streaming audio.

  • Record from microphone, line input, or other sources.
  • Dub over existing tracks to create multi-track recordings.
  • Record up to 16 channels at once (requires multi-channel hardware).
  • Level meters can monitor volume levels before, during, and after recording.

Import and Export

Import sound files, edit them, and combine them with other files or new recordings. Export your recordings in several common file formats.

  • Import and export WAV, AIFF, AU, and Ogg Vorbis files.
  • Import MPEG audio (including MP2 and MP3 files) with libmad.
  • Export MP3s with the optional LAME encoder library.
  • Create WAV or AIFF files suitable for burning to CD.
  • Import and export all file formats supported by libsndfile.
  • Open raw (headerless) audio files using the “Import Raw” command.
  • Note: Audacity does not currently support WMA, AAC, or most other proprietary or restricted file formats.

Editing

  • Easy editing with Cut, Copy, Paste, and Delete.
  • Use unlimited Undo (and Redo) to go back any number of steps.
  • Very fast editing of large files.
  • Edit and mix an unlimited number of tracks.
  • Use the Drawing tool to alter individual sample points.
  • Fade the volume up or down smoothly with the Envelope tool.

Effects

  • Change the pitch without altering the tempo, or vice-versa.
  • Remove static, hiss, hum, or other constant background noises.
  • Alter frequencies with Equalization, FFT Filter, and Bass Boost effects.
  • Adjust volumes with Compressor, Amplify, and Normalize effects.
  • Other built-in effects include:
    • Echo
    • Phaser
    • Wahwah
    • Reverse

Sound Quality

  • Record and edit 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit (floating point) samples.
  • Record at up to 96 KHz.
  • Sample rates and formats are converted using high-quality resampling and dithering.
  • Mix tracks with different sample rates or formats, and Audacity will convert them automatically in realtime.

Plug-Ins

  • Add new effects with LADSPA plugins.
  • Audacity includes some sample plugins by Steve Harris.
  • Load VST plugins for Windows and Mac, with the optional VST Enabler.
  • Write new effects with the built-in Nyquist programming language.

Analysis

  • Spectrogram mode for visualizing frequencies.
  • “Plot Spectrum” command for detailed frequency analysis.

Overview

PowerPoint Viewer 2007 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. This viewer also supports opening password-protected Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them in the PowerPoint Viewer 2007.

The following section on Font Components amends the license terms for the PowerPoint Viewer and must accompany any permitted redistribution of the PowerPoint Viewer:

Font Components

You may use the fonts that accompany the PowerPoint Viewer only to display and print content from a device running a Microsoft Windows operating system. Additionally, you may do the following:

  • Embed fonts in content as permitted by the embedding restrictions in the fonts
  • When printing content, temporarily download the fonts to a printer or other output device

You may not copy, install or use the fonts on other devices.


Note: If no end user license agreement is presented during installation or the first run of PowerPoint Viewer 2007, by downloading this software you agree that the software is subject to the terms of the end user license agreement that you already accepted with your previous installation of PowerPoint Viewer 2007, with Microsoft as the licensor.

The following Microsoft PowerPoint features are not supported by this viewer:

  • Information Rights Management (IRM) presentations.
  • Running macros, programs, or opening linked or embedded objects.

Instructions

To install this download:

  1. Download the file by clicking the Download button (above) and saving the file to your hard disk.
  2. Double-click the PowerPointViewer.exe program file on your hard disk to start the setup program.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

To specify a download install location (for network administrators):

  1. On the Start menu, click Run, and type command.
  2. Navigate to the path of the installed PowerPointViewer.exe program.
  3. Type PowerPointViewer.exe /extract:c:\target where c:\target is the extract directory.
  4. Navigate to the installation directory specified in the previous step.
  5. Type msiexec /i ppviewer.msi INSTALLLOCATION=c:\target” where c:\target is the installation directory.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

Instructions for use:

  • Once you have installed this download, from the Start menu under All Programs, open Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007.

    Note PowerPoint Viewer 2007 registers with the .ppt, .pptx, .pptm, .pot, .potx, .potm, .pps, .ppsx and .ppsm file extensions only if a version of PowerPoint is not installed on your computer. If registered, double-clicking on these file types will launch PowerPoint Viewer 2007.



To remove this download:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of currently installed programs, select Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007, and then click Remove or Add/Remove. If a dialog box appears, follow the instructions to remove the program.
  4. Click Yes or OK to confirm that you want to remove the program.

To remove the download file

  • Delete the file PowerPointViewer.exe.
